The original Lawson Box pochade
I discovered an old box in my grandmother's sewing room that I absolutely fell in love with. I learned it was made for my mother and given to her for Christmas around age 12. My family were accomplished water skiers, constantly performing in ski shows — athletes and artists in equal measure.

My mother and Grandmother
A restored and colorized image of Lawson Andrew Babcock, creator of The Lawson Box · Marathon, New York · 1880–1977
My great-great-grandfather Lawson Andrew Babcock made pochade boxes out of a building by the railroad tracks in upstate New York. He was born in 1880 and lived to 97 — which means he saw everything. Every wave of innovation, every shift in how the world worked, every new thing that was supposed to change everything.
And through all of it, painters still needed a box.
A pochade box is what artists used before studios were a thing — a little hinged case that opens into an easel, holds your palette, goes wherever you go. The form has changed. The materials have changed. But the relationship between an artist and their tools never disappears. It just evolves. The artist is always the voice behind it.
His son Claude apparently loaded dice and held cards for Frank Sinatra and John Wayne. We're still looking into that part.
What I know is that somewhere between the sawdust and the poker table, something got passed down. That is the American way.
The agency is named after an artist's heart in Marathon, New York and a dedication to American art. Digital or otherwise, there is an American voice inside of it.
